About Play The Rig

At Play The Rig, we transform everyday objects into interactive instruments, creating immersive sound experiences for all ages. From giant gongs and upcycled percussion to unique, hands-on musical installations, we invite you to explore, play, and connect through the power of music.

Whether we're at festivals, events, or in community spaces, our goal is to inspire imagination and foster a love for both music and sustainability.

Visually beautiful and full of energy, Play The Rig brings the feel of a vintage summer fête to your event while promoting upcycling and creativity. Our team of friendly Riggers host, play, and set up grooves to get everyone involved. As a free-play drop-in zone, The Rig can be enjoyed throughout your event, making it a memorable experience for the whole family.

Meet Amy

Director and Creator

I'm passionate about blending creativity, sustainability, and community engagement through interactive musical experiences. With a background in music performance, teaching and workshops as a Disney Teaching Artist, I founded Play the Rig in 2013 to inspire people of all ages to connect with music in a hands-on, eco-friendly way. With Play The Rig, I have worked with BBC Ten Pieces, CBeebies, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Southbank Centre, WOMAD, English Heritage and Camp Bestival to name a few. We have collaborated with the LSO and Great Ormond Steet Hospital and have been Arts Council England funded.

Planning your day with Play The Rig

  • Sound: Play The Rig produces a continuous but inoffensive sound that’s fun and immersive without being too loud.

  • Set-up & Pack-down: Allow around 2 hours for assembly and 2 hours for disassembly (set-up dependant). Our team handles it all!

  • Space & Access: We need direct access to the area where The Rig will be set up, plus parking for our van during the event.

  • Space Requirements:

    • Full Rig: up to 10m x 10m ground space

    • Big Rig: 2m (H) x 1m (W)

    • Mini Rigs: 1m (H) x 1m (W)

    • Festival gazebo: 3m x 4m (total space ~5m²)

  • Weather: The Rig can handle a light drizzle, but for heavy rain or wet conditions it needs to be set up indoors. On sunny days, we usually use our gazebo as a base and spread out around it for outdoor play.

  • Safety & Supervision: Our team of Riggers not only set up and guide play but also ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience but the use of The Rig is at the guests own risk.
